Are the Arts a Necessary Part of Education?

Some people insist that the arts are not a necessary part of education. Yet, giving our children a well rounded education should be our first priority, however, it’s easier said than done. A steady diet of math, language, reading, science, and history is typical for most homeschooled children, but what about fine arts?

“Involvement in the arts is associated with gains in math, reading, cognitive ability, critical thinking, and verbal skill. Arts learning can also improve motivation, concentration, confidence, and teamwork.” ~ Fran Smith

Over the years, research has shown that arts education contributes to producing the many desirable qualities that we want to instill in our children. The relationship between the arts and life is interwoven throughout history. Even early man expressed themselves with cave drawings.

I personally experienced this connection as a high school student. In my freshman year, I had a rough start and was failing several courses. I had taken music lessons as a child, but during this time had stopped. My parents began again to take me to music lessons and I was able to begin art lessons that year. I loved these lessons! By the end of the year my grades had turned around. I was not only doing better in school, but was enjoying the opportunity to creatively express myself on a daily basis. I began to be a confident, motivated, and happy young person. The opportunity I had to be involved in fine arts education definitely affected the outcome of my life.

It has been my goal to give each of my children these opportunities through music lessons as well as through online art lessons. It is such a blessing to watch your children grow and learn, but even more blessed to see their creative expression lead to a confident and expressive individual. There are many ways to incorporate arts education into your homeschool. A few options include: individual lessons, special classes, self instructional courses, and even online arts courses. There are many different avenues to choose from. Each year brings better homeschool resources and more materials to help homeschool families add art education without stress. Yes, it does take a little extra time and work for the parents – but it just might change your child’s life.
