Don't forget to add the element of social science to your gardening. Kids can study humger issues around the world, starting with the book What the World Eats, and researching various solutions to hunger. They can get involved with their local food bank, or they can organize a food drive or start a "pop-up" food pantry.

Kids can also research issues surrounding genetically modified foods, organic vs. local food and other food-related topics. Teens can look into issues of body image and health with relation to food and advertising; SuperSize Me and Fast Food Nation are great to use together to get talking on our daily interaction with food and how we eat.
