Have you ever let your preschoolers play with flashlights? It can be a very fun activity, especially when combined with the Word of God. Psalm 119:105 says this: “Your Word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path.” Here is a fun Bible school activity you can play with your little ones called “Happy Lights.”

Here’s what you do:

For this activity you will need a flashlight for each child or at least one for every 2 children so that they can share. Before class, cover the ends of each flashlight with a piece of construction paper out of which you’ve cut a happy face. Include a smile, two eyes and a nose. Tape the papers to the flashlights. You are now ready to play this activity.

Introduce Psalm 119:105 in the following way: Boys and girls, raise your hands if you ever get scared of the dark. (Wait for response.) I get scared of the dark too. I like being in the light much better! I think God likes the light better too. Here’s a Bible verse that tells how God’s Word, the Bible, is like a light and a lamp. Listen to what it says: Your Word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” Now let’s say it together. I’ll say some word first and then you repeat after me. (Say a couple of words and let the children repeat after you.) Can anybody point to some lights in our room? (Wait for response.) Good job! Lights are important. They help us see where to go and keep us from bumping into things so that we don’t get hurt. God’s Word, the Bible, is like a light. It also shows us where to go and keeps us safe if we do what God tells us to do. God’s Word should make us very happy just like this happy light I am holding. (Show the children your happy face flashlight.) When we love God and obey Him we will be happy. Here is a flashlight for each of you to hold. (Explain how to turn it on and off.) Now, I am going to turn the lights off in our room. But before I do, everyone turn your flashlights on. (Turn the lights off in your room.) Wow! Would you look at how bright our room is? It’s beautiful. Now, shine your lights up on the wall. Do you see the happy faces? They’re all over! Now, we’re going to play a little game with our flashlight. I am going to say an object in the room. For example, I might say “the clock.” I want everyone to shine their lights on the clock. We will then say our Bible verse together.

At this point, choose an object in your room the children can point to. Then have the children repeat the verse after you. Do this several times picking a new object each time. At the end, you might sing the song “This Little Light of Mine” and have the children dance around the room.

Remember the fun game you played as a kid that started out something like this…”I’m going to Grandma’s house and inside my suitcase I’m going to pack my teddy bear.” The next child would have to continue this line of thinking by remembering what the last person packed and then add his own item into the suitcase. The list of items got longer and longer and it became harder and harder to remember the list. Therefore, the first person to forget what came next was out and the game started all over again. I loved that game! But my memory was a lot better then than it is now. However, your kids’ memory is probably sharp as tacks. So why not test their memory skills in two great ways? One will use a concordance and the other will use the wonderful Bible verse of John 1:1 – “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.”

Here’s what you do:

Make alphabet letter cards on index cards for all the major beginning letters of words found in your concordance. Place all these letters in a bucket or bag out of which your kids will pick. After each letter is picked, be sure you display the letters in the order they were pulled somewhere in the room. I always display mine on a pocket chart. You will also want to have a rendering of John 1:1 as written above. You will want to take the time to recite this verse several times so that your kids can memorize it quickly. You also might want to write it on a board and erase some of the words so that they have a few words to prompt their memory of how it goes. You will need a scorekeeper for this game and you will need at least one concordance.

Here’s how to play:

Divide your class into 2 teams. Begin by saying the following:

John 1:1 says this: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” Wow! The Word of God must be very important if it was in the beginning of time just like God. In fact, this Bible verse says that “the Word was God.” If this is true, which of course it is, we should do our best at knowing God’s Word and studying it the rest of our lives. One of the best tools that we can use to study the Bible is the concordance. A concordance gives us the most important words in the Bible in alphabetical order just like a dictionary. So, if we wanted to look up the word “heaven” in the concordance, we would find the “H” words. We would then search until we found the word “heaven” and then we would see several Bible verses that contained the word “heaven” and where they are found in the Bible.

Let’s play a fun game called “Inside My Concordance”. I will give the first team a chance to come up and pick a letter out of my bag here. Let’s say you pick the letter “L”. You must then look for a word in the concordance that begins with that letter. Let’s say you found the word “love”. You would then say, “Inside my concordance, I found some love.” The next student from the second team will come and pick a new letter and go through the same process, but he will have to add onto the other words already mentioned. As the list gets longer, it will be harder to remember.

If you mess up, you can redeem yourself by reciting John 1:1 correctly. If you do, you will earn 100 points for your team and the game continues with the same list. If you are not successful at reciting John 1:1, the other team gets the points and a new list of concordance words should be started. The team with the most points.

I have the privilege of offering teacher training workshops to hundreds of Sunday School teachers and children’s workers every year. I love what I do, but sometimes I don’t like what I hear. Take, for example, this question: Do you have something easy I can do for Sunday School? If I am honest, when I hear that, it’s like hearing fingernails being scraped on the chalkboard. On one hand, I know we are all busy and life is more hectic than ever. However, on the other hand, it’s crucially important that every Christian children’s worker understands that teaching children about God might be one of the most important jobs they will ever have. Important jobs take a lot of work. They are not easy and require a great deal of preparation and passion.

Preparation:

There’s a saying which goes like this: The teacher who fails to prepare, prepares to fail. If you are only preparing for Sunday School on Saturday night, you are not putting the time and work in that God and your children deserve. All the elements of a good Sunday school class should be well thought out and completely prepared. Have you read and meditated on the Bible story you will share? Are you ready to present the story in a creative way that will keep your children interested and engaged? If doing a craft, do you have all the items ready for each child? Are your worship songs ready to sing? Make sure each and every part of your class time is completely ready to present.

Passion:

On a scale of 1 to 10, how excited do you get about waking up on Sunday morning to share what God has given you with your kids? Now before you start thinking I’m some kind of saint, I have to tell you that I have my Sundays where my energy level is not very high. On the other hand, I can definitely attest to the fact that there are many Sundays where I can’t wait to get to my class. I am genuinely excited to share what God has given me to share to each and every child. Ask my husband. He will say it’s true. Being prepared with my Bible lesson and songs and Bible review games truly heightens my excitement. Praying and asking the Lord to bless each of the kids this week gets my engine roaring. There are so many kids sitting in Sunday school rooms across the world who are just waiting for someone to share God’s love with them. Yes. This is even true of kids from Christian homes. As a Sunday school teacher, you have the unique opportunity to pour into your 6 or 7 kids (or whatever your class size is) and lavish on them God’s wonderful and life-changing truths. That is pretty incredible!

Bottom line – Being a Sunday school teacher is not easy and it takes good homework. You should see being a Sunday school teacher as one of the greatest things you get to do each week. Your kids deserve it.

I think it’s safe to say that a sign of spiritual maturity would be a boldness to share the Good News or Gospel of Jesus Christ. Roman 1:16 says, “I am not ashamed of the Gospel because it is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes…” What a great verse and one that every Christian should have as their motto. It’s definitely one that should be passed on to all we meet as the Lord leads. Here’s a fun Bible school activity to help your kids memorize this wonderful Scripture so that they might be a little bolder the next time they share Jesus with their friends. It’s called “Pass the Power.”

Here’s what you do:

For this activity you will need 2 paper cups with handles. Decorate each cup with stickers and the words “power of God” written on each one. You are now ready to play this activity.

Divide your class into 2 teams. This game will be played best with 8 or more people. Before playing, say the following: What are some powerful things in this world? (Wait for responses such as dynamite, money, kings or rulers.) You’re right. All those things hold some degree of power. Now, how about the Gospel? You know, the Good News that God sent His one and only Son to die for our sins. Is the Gospel of Jesus Christ powerful? (Wait for response.) If you said, “Yes!” you are absolutely right. So, if the Gospel is powerful, should we ever be ashamed or embarrassed by it? (Wait for responses. Be sensitive to what some of your kids may say.) Who would like to read Romans 1:16? You see the Gospel or Good News of Jesus Christ is powerful because it can actually change lives for eternity. Do you think that something this amazing should be shared and passed on to those you meet along life’s road? (Wait for response.) I think so! So, let’s play a game called “Pass the Power.”

At this point, you will divide the 2 teams of children and arrange each team in a circle facing out, with their backs to the center of the ring. This will allow the kids of one team to see the action of the other team. Assign a captain for each team and give him a cup, which will hang on the little finer of his right hand. Mention how the cup is going to symbolize the power of God’s Gospel. At a signal to begin, the captain passes the cup from his right little finger to that of his right-hand neighbor. The cup is passed clockwise around the circle and back to the captain. When it reaches the captain, the entire team yells, “One!” indicating that the cup has made one round. The cup continues around the circle for 3 rounds. Once a team finishes the 3rd round, they must go to a chalkboard and write Romans 1:16 from memory. The first team to write the Bible verse first and correctly wins the first round of play. Play several times. The team with the most wins, wins!

Psalm 119:28, 32 says this: “Strengthen me according to Your Word. I run in the path of your commands for you have set my heart free.” Isn’t “heart free” a great phrase? I believe God’s greatest desire for all His children is that their hearts would be set free to worship Him and to glorify Him. Here is a fun Bible school activity to help even your little ones begin to understand this truth.

Here’s what you do:

For this Bible school activity you will need a large cardboard or foam core square about 16” to 18” big. (I like the foam squares better because you can find them in colors and it’s also thicker and stronger than cardboard. ) You will also need some thick black yarn and a red construction paper heart almost as big as your square and a small dab of removable tacky adhesive. Laminate the heart and stick the heart into the center of the square. Now cut 6 slits on each side of the square about one-half inch long equidistantly apart. Secure one end of the yarn onto the back of the square and pull it through one of the slits. Continue wrapping the yarn around the square, criss-crossing back and forth. The heart should now be somewhat hidden. You are now ready to share this Bible school activity.

Introduce Psalm 119:28, 32 in the following way: Boys and girls, do you see the heart inside my square? (Wait for response.) Is this heart free or is it all tangled up inside? (Wait for response.) You’re right. This heart is not free. I think it makes God sad when our hearts are not free to love Him. Psalm 119:28, 32 says this: “Strengthen me according to Your Word. I run in the path of your commands for you have set my heart free.” Would you guys like to help me free this heart? (Wait for response.) Good. We are going to say our Bible verse together. I’ll say some words first, then you repeat after me. After each word I hear you say, I will pull away a piece of the yarn. When we get to the end of the verse, our heart will be free! Yipee!

At this point, hold up the square and as directed above, you will say the first word of Psalm 119:28, 32 and have the children repeat that word. Undo the first section of yarn by releasing it from its notch. Continue to do this until all the yarn has been undone. Take the heart off the square and fly it around as if it were free. Your little ones will really enjoy this part. Wrap the square again and do the activity again. On the following times, you might allow a child to un-notch a portion of yarn. Happy heart freeing!

I really enjoy learning definitions to words. For example, I remember sitting in my youth group years ago and hearing our teacher say that sin, in its foundational definition, means to miss the mark. In other words, sin puts us off track from where God wants us to be. Our elementary kids need to understand this and realize that all “miss the mark” and sin at times. That’s what Romans 3:23 says. Here’s the complete version: “All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” Here is a fun Bible school activity you can play with your kids to help them memorize this important Bible verse. It’s called “Missing the Mark”.

Here’s what you do:

This game can actually be played indoors or out. If you are cooped up in your classroom all the time, you might want to grab a piece of sidewalk chalk and head outside. Otherwise you will need to make the following grid, I will describe, on your floor with some masking tape. Make a 12-square grid, but then put a 13th square right in the middle. I suggest making the grid about 1.5 yards long and wide. Next, label each square, except for the middle one, with one word from Romans 3:23 along with a point value of 200, 300, or 400. The middle square gets a point value of 500. There are 12 words in Romans 3:23 including the reference. Do not place them in any kind of order. They should look scrambled on the grid. Finally, grab a beanbag or some other object that will throw and land nicely on the grid. You are now ready to play the game.

Here’s how to play:

Before beginning the game, say the following: Have any of you ever shot an arrow? (Wait for responses. If no one has shot an arrow, ask if they’ve ever seen someone shoot an arrow.) I’ve shot an arrow and I hardly ever made the bulls eye. I always missed the mark. Did you know that’s kind of what sin is like? It’s like missing the mark or falling short of where you should be – where God wants you to be. Romans 3:23 says this: “All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” This verse means that we are all sinners and we all miss the mark at times and do wrong things that displease God. Let’s play a game called “Missing the Mark” to help us memorize this important Bible verse.

Divide your class into 2 teams for this Bible school activity. Give a child from the first team the chance to throw the beanbag. He should try for the middle square. If he succeeds, he must look away from the grid and recite Romans 3:23 by heart. If he does so correctly, he earns 500 points for his team. If he lands on a square with a word on it, he can earn the points on that square by saying the verse while looking at the grid. However, before he says it, you the teacher, must erase the word in the box. Play continues to the next team. Eventually, it will get harder to recite the verse as the words are erased. On any turn, if the beanbag lands on a square whose word has already been erased, then the teacher erases a different word on the grid, but the child only earns the points of the original square. The team with the most points wins.

I am so proud of our military and how day in and day out they are defending our country. These men and women are truly standing firm as they do their job with great passion and focus. Do your kids know that God wants them to have this same kind of passion and focus while being on duty for Him? First Corinthians 15:16 says this: “Be on your guard, stand firm in the faith, be men of courage and be strong.” Doesn’t this verse sound like the perfect Scripture for any soldier? Here is a Bible school activity to help your “young soldiers for the Lord” memorize this great verse while having some fun with a ball.

Here’s what you do:

Before playing this game, you will want to introduce First Corinthians 15:16 to your class. I present this in a militaristic way. I even wear a soldier’s hat and say things like: “You’re speaking to a commanding officer! You will address me as Sir!” (Have the kids say, “Yes, Sir!”) Then I say, “I can’t hear you!” (The kids shout louder, “Yes, Sir!”) I think you get the idea. I then have them recite the verse several times in a loud soldierly voice. Once you feel like the kids are beginning to know the verse, then you can introduce the game.

Divide your class into 2 teams. Have them stand in 2 straight lines, about 15 feet apart, facing each other. Bring out a ball and pick one team to start. Each child should stand with their feet wide enough apart for the ball to go through. They should also have their hands down to their sides in a soldier’s stance. Give a child the ball. Say the following, “Alright, soldiers! Here are your orders. Each team will get a chance to try and knock the other line of soldiers off balance. Each team should do their very best to stand firm and stay on your guard just like our Bible verse says. If a team successfully rolls the ball through the legs of a soldier on the opposite team, that soldier must say the Bible verse correctly. If he does so, his team gets 100 points. If he does not say the verse correctly, the team that threw the ball will get the 100 points. By the way, you may not use your hands or feet to stop the ball in any way. Your job is to stand firm. Are you ready? (Kids say, “Yes, Sir!)

Have the teams take turns rolling the ball. Have someone keep score and by all means, stand firm during this fun Bible school activity.

Exercise your vocal cords! Auditory Learners learn best through hearing information.

Verbalizing is also very important for learning. Plan plenty of time for discussions.

Don't be alarmed if your child reads aloud or talks to herself. Children with auditory learning styles NEED to hear themselves speak in order to learn.

Auditory learners usually…

Remember what is heard

Speak aloud while writing

Learn to read easily with phonics

Read out loud to themselves

Remember information set to music

Notice sounds

Enjoy being read to

Talk a lot

Are distracted by background noise

Distracted by graphic information during lectures

Gain little meaning from written information until it has been heard

Have poor comprehension when reading silently

Have difficulty following written directions

How to choose Auditory homeschool curriculum

Choose curriculum that can be read aloud, has audio cds and online/DVD lectures. Look for resources that include discussion questions and oral assignments.

HISTORY - Reading aloud and books-on-cd are ways to learn American and World history.

LANGUAGE ARTS - Auditory Learners would rather talk about the assignment than write about it. Narration, discussions and oral presentations are alternatives to written assignments.

LITERATURE - Reading aloud and books-on-cd are great ways to enjoy literature.

MATH - Use DVD/online lectures and resources that put facts to music.

PHONICS - Build phonemic awareness through phonics CD's and reading aloud to your child.

SCIENCE - Reading aloud, information set to music, and lectures are ways for your child to learn science. Use narration, discussions, oral presentations and demonstrations for assignments.

Auditory Learning Activities

Ask yourself...

(1) How can the topic be presented verbally?
(2) How can my child 'tell' me what he has learned?

Teach Lessons Using...

Lectures on CD

Reading aloud to your child

Facts set to music

Live lectures (or online/ DVD)

Interactive computer programs

Talking through lessons and assignments with your child

Time for discussions

Group (or partner) activities

Videos

Reading aloud instructions to your child

Choral reading

Have Your Auditory Learner...

Participate in group (or partner) activities

Read along with books-on-cd/mp3

Read aloud to oneself (or other siblings/whole family)

Verbally repeat key points

Set facts to music

Use interactive computer programs

Talk aloud while following a recipe, reading instructions for a literature assignment, memorizing states and capitals, working though an algebra problem, etc.

Answer workbook/comprehension questions orally

Use narration instead of book reports

Give oral presentations instead of written essays

Set information to familiar tunes and sing it

After Mary heard the amazing news that she would become the mother of our Lord and Savior, she went to visit her cousin Elizabeth who was going to have John the Baptist. This story is so precious. Every mother loves to feel their baby move around inside of them, but John’s jump must have been the greatest leap of all time! This part of Luke One is also where we are given Mary’s beautiful song of praise to her God. Take some time to go over this with your children. Maybe encourage them to come up with their own song of praise.

Here are thirteen 5 “W” questions – who, what, when, where, why and how - with their answers for the story of “Mary Visits Elizabeth” found in Luke 1: 39-56. You can ask the questions or you could have a nice hand or finger puppet do the asking. Have fun!

Thinking skills are necessary in today's society to make good decisions yet most people, myself included, tend to make decisions based on feelings rather than thought. While I know that vegetables are healthier for me than chocolate, I still prefer chocolate. What about you?

Children who learn to develop good thinking skills while they are young have a head start in life. That's where homeschoolers have an advantage, since we can focus on these skills every day. Four particular thinking skills that are important are:

Logic - using your mind rather than your heart

Brainstorming - investigating all possible choices, beyond the obvious ones

Consequences - looking carefully to see where each choice may lead

Linear Planning - breaking down a complex task into a series of manageable steps

Logic is the best way to decide between choices. A logical approach bypasses your emotions and all their associated problems. You can still choose to follow your feelings if you prefer, but at least now you know the reasoned and wisest choice. Children who play Checkers (also known as Draughts) soon discover that someone who plays logically will beat another player who chooses to move pieces at random.

Brainstorming is a thinking skill where children learn to look beyond the first choice. While one short-term goal may seem desirable, it may lead to a bad decision in the long-term, or vice-versa. There may be easier or better ways of achieving goals by thinking through a variety of options. One example is from a Chess game in 1858 between Paul Morphy and two opponents who worked together. By his sixteenth move, he had lost his Queen, which is normally a very poor move and is generally avoided. However, he was looking at the long-term goal of winning rather than the short-term goal of saving his Queen. As a result, he had been planning to lose his Queen so that he could win, which he did on his very next move!

Consequences are one of the most significant thinking skills a child can gain. One option may seem to be attractive but we need to consider the results of following this choice while we can still correct what may ultimately be a bad decision. Boxes is a simple two player game where each player draws lines between dots on a piece of paper, hoping to complete more boxes than their opponent. Children will soon learn that drawing a line in the wrong place can earn the other player a lot of boxes - a lesson I learned one day when playing against one of my sons. During the game, children need to think about the consequences of every line they draw. It is much easier to learn this lesson now than later in life when the effect may be much more damaging.

Linear Planning is the last of our important strategy skills that can be learned playing games. We may have dreams that seem unattainable, such as strong family relationships or financial security. Linear Planning can help by reducing a complex goal into a series of much smaller and more manageable steps. Tower of Hanoi Card Game is a two player game based on the puzzle of the same name, where nine cards are randomly dealt into three piles. The cards must be rearranged into order according to some simple rules. At first view it seems impossible to work out the game, until you use logic to consider the consequences of a move and break it down into smaller pieces. Instead of tackling the entire set of cards, try working with only two cards and get them into the right order. Using this approach my eleven year old son can now solve the game in less than ten minutes, although it has taken a lot of practise.

Logic, Brainstorming, Consequences and Linear Planning are problem solving skills that all children should learn, to prepare them for their future. Many commercial games are available that can assist children to learn these skills, but free strategy games like Checkers, Chess, Boxes and Tower of Hanoi Card Game can make learning these skills enjoyable. Isn't that worth considering for your child's future?
